Cooktop repair: common questions
What people want to know about cooktop repair before a technician comes out. With gas, if you smell it at all, get outside and call your gas utility or 911.
Ready to get it looked at?
A technician comes to your home anywhere in our service area and diagnoses your cooktop on the spot. You see the price before any work starts.
Only after the diagnosis. The technician checks the igniters or elements, the burner switches and the wiring underneath, tells you which one failed and what the cooktop repair costs, and nothing starts until you approve.
For cooktops: Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE Appliances, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and Frigidaire, plus the other 23 makers listed on this page.
When the fix would cost too much for how old and worn the cooktop is. You'll hear our view after the diagnosis, and the decision stays with you.
Go to the cooktop's manufacturer while its coverage lasts; that repair should cost you nothing through them. We're independent of every brand, so covered work isn't ours to take.
Usually on the plate on the underside of the cooktop, also listed in the manual. Send it with the brand and a sentence on what the cooktop is doing. With gas, if you smell it at all, get outside and call your gas utility or 911.
Cooktop repair, in more detail
We repair cooktops from 31 brands at your home in Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville. Burners that won't light, uneven heat and induction error codes usually trace to an igniter, an infinite switch, an element or a power board.
Our order of checks on a cooktop is igniters and burner ports on gas, elements and infinite switches on radiant electric, and the power board on induction. That sequence finds the actual fault without charging you for parts that weren't broken.
The cooktop fault that looks like something else
With cooktops, a common misreading is an induction cooktop that faults out during long, high-power cooking, usually because its cooling vents underneath are blocked, not because a board died. Misjudge it and you buy the wrong part, which on a cooktop is often the costliest one inside.
Your cooktop and the Charlotte climate
Locally, the factor that matters is the mix of gas cooktops on Piedmont Natural Gas service and electric ones in Charlotte kitchens; with gas, any smell of gas means leaving the house first and calling your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Charlotte kitchens use both gas, supplied by Piedmont Natural Gas, and electric, and the same cooktop model can come in either version with different parts. In older close-in neighborhoods the gas line or circuit may be older than the cooktop, so the supply gets checked as well.
Try this first
On gas, dry the burner caps and seat them squarely, since a crooked cap gives a lopsided flame. On induction, confirm the pan is flat and that a magnet sticks to its base. A gas smell means everyone leaves the house, and the call to your gas utility or 911 is made from outside.
Cooktop brands we work on
We list 31 brands for cooktop repair; you'll find them all linked on this page. Gas cooktop burners differ a lot between brands (Thermador's Star burner, Wolf's stacked burners, Viking's open burners), so parts rarely cross between them.
Kenmore and other store brands were built by several manufacturers, so the model number, not the badge, tells us which parts fit.
How the visit works
A technician comes to your home, diagnoses the cooktop, explains what failed and quotes the repair. You approve the price before any work starts, and if the cooktop isn't worth repairing, we'll tell you.
Parts are matched to the model number, using manufacturer parts where available; if a part is an equivalent, we say so. We're independent, so a cooktop still under the maker's warranty should go to the manufacturer first.
Get the cooktop diagnosed
We come out, test the igniters or elements, the burner switches and the wiring underneath, and quote the cooktop repair before any work.
