Cabarrus County lies northeast of Charlotte and was formed from part of Mecklenburg County in 1792. Concord is the county seat. The other municipalities are the city of Kannapolis, which reaches into Rowan County, the towns of Harrisburg, Midland and Mount Pleasant, and a western strip of the city of Locust, which is mostly in Stanly County.

Three kinds of place in one county
Concord holds the county's oldest neighborhoods, around downtown and the North Union Street Historic District, and its fastest-growing ones, west toward Concord Mills and the speedway. Harrisburg, south of Concord, is almost entirely owner-occupied houses built since the 1990s. Kannapolis grew as a Cannon Mills company town and still has the mill houses to show for it.
East and south of those cities, the county turns rural. Midland and Mount Pleasant are small towns with farms, newer subdivisions and manufactured homes around them, and the Rocky River runs along the county's eastern side. Each setting puts appliances in different rooms and on different fuels.
Power and gas differ by address
Electricity in Cabarrus County comes from several suppliers. The City of Concord runs its own electric system, Duke Energy serves much of Kannapolis and other parts of the county, and Union Power and EnergyUnited also have members here. Gas service is uneven too. Piped gas is common in Concord and Harrisburg, Enbridge Gas North Carolina extended a line to Kannapolis and Concord in 2025, and around Midland and Mount Pleasant few homes have utility gas and some rely on propane.
