Repairs done where the appliance lives

The county holds a wide spread of housing: early-1900s homes near Uptown, postwar ranches on the east and west sides, two-story subdivisions from the last thirty years, and lake houses up around Lake Norman. The makes of appliance are the same everywhere; how they are installed is not. We come out to the house, pin down the failed part, and put a repair price in front of you to accept or turn down.

Older houses

Period kitchens often leave tight clearances behind each unit.

Apartments and condos

Note elevator, loading or parking rules on the booking form.

Upstairs laundry

A leaking washer over a finished ceiling is worth booking early.

Repair work across the county

Mecklenburg County is Charlotte and six towns: Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson to the north around Lake Norman, and Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville to the south and east. Charlotte is the county seat, and land outside those seven municipalities is unincorporated county. We repair appliances in homes across all of it, in 15 service areas covering 29 residential ZIP codes.

The housing changes a lot from one end of the county to the other. Close to Uptown are streetcar suburbs laid out from the 1890s into the 1910s and former mill villages; beyond them, postwar ranch neighborhoods; then two-story subdivisions built since the 1990s, apartment buildings in Uptown and South End, and lake homes on Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie. Each of those puts appliances in a different setting, and the setting is part of the repair.

Every visit works the same way. A technician comes to the home, diagnoses the appliance, explains what failed and quotes the repair, and nothing is done until you approve the price. If a repair isn't worth it, you'll be told so.

Charlotte and the six towns

Neighborhood names here are easy to mix up with towns. Ballantyne, SouthPark, South End, NoDa, Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Myers Park, Elizabeth, University City, Highland Creek and Steele Creek are all parts of the City of Charlotte. Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville are separate towns with their own governments.

Utilities run across those lines. Duke Energy supplies electricity to most of the county, Piedmont Natural Gas supplies natural gas, and Charlotte Water serves the city and the towns from Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake. Gas and electric appliances are both common, so the technician never assumes which one your home has.

How coverage works at the county line

Coverage goes by ZIP code, so a county line running through a ZIP doesn't matter. Davidson's 28036 reaches into Cabarrus and Iredell, Huntersville's 28078 and University City's 28269 into Cabarrus, and 28215 in East Charlotte touches Cabarrus too; every address in those ZIPs is served. Beyond Mecklenburg County, we also cover listed ZIPs in Cabarrus, Union, Iredell, Stanly and Anson counties and in York and Lancaster counties, South Carolina.

Mailing addresses don't always match town limits. A Matthews, Mint Hill or Pineville address can sit inside Charlotte or in unincorporated county, and parts of Steele Creek and Northwest Charlotte are unincorporated. None of that affects the visit; the ZIP and street address are what we need.

The 15 service areas

Center city and close-in neighborhoods: Uptown Charlotte: the four wards and Gateway, mostly apartment and condo buildings; South End & Dilworth: Dilworth's 1890s streetcar suburb and South End's newer apartments; Myers Park & Elizabeth: Myers Park, Eastover and Elizabeth, with period houses and remodeled kitchens; NoDa & Plaza Midwood: NoDa's mill cottages, Plaza Midwood and Optimist Park; SouthPark & Cotswold: Cotswold, Sherwood Forest, Quail Hollow and the Park Road corridor.

South and west: Ballantyne & South Charlotte: Ballantyne, Carmel and Providence, largely two-story homes in planned communities; Pineville: the town of Pineville and the subdivisions around Carolina Place; Steele Creek: the county's newest subdivisions, out to Lake Wylie; West Charlotte: Wesley Heights, the airport area and the York Road corridor; Northwest Charlotte: Mountain Island Lake, Paw Creek, Beatties Ford and Northlake; East Charlotte: Eastland, Idlewild, Hickory Grove and Reedy Creek.

North and east: University City: the UNC Charlotte area, Highland Creek and Mallard Creek; Huntersville: the town of Huntersville, between Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake; Cornelius & Davidson: the Lake Norman towns of Cornelius and Davidson; Matthews & Mint Hill: the towns of Matthews and Mint Hill, and Charlotte addresses around them; Concord and Harrisburg: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Kannapolis: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Midland and Mount Pleasant: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Indian Trail and Stallings: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Waxhaw and Marvin: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Monroe, Wingate and Marshville: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Mooresville: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Locust, Stanfield and Oakboro: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Peachland and Polkton: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Fort Mill and Tega Cay: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Rock Hill: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Clover and Lake Wylie: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Indian Land: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage; Lancaster: part of our Mecklenburg County coverage.

Freezes, ice storms and power outages in Mecklenburg County

Winter across the Carolina Piedmont is usually mild, which is exactly why a hard freeze or an ice storm catches houses off guard. The ice storm of December 2002 brought down trees and lines across both Carolinas and left more than half of the region's largest utility's customers without power, some for well over a week. Supply lines to an ice maker or washer that pass through a garage, crawl space or outside wall in Mecklenburg County are the first to freeze in that kind of cold.

During an outage, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. USDA guidance is that an unopened refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours, a full freezer about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. Run any generator outside, far from doors, windows and vents, since its fumes contain carbon monoxide.

Dryer vents are a fire-safety item

Airflow gets checked on a dryer in Mecklenburg County before anyone orders an element, igniter or fuse. A dryer that heats for ten minutes and then goes cold, or one that runs a full cycle and leaves jeans damp, is usually telling you the exhaust is choked. The lint screen housing, the connector behind the machine and the outside hood are where blockages collect.

Plastic and thin foil accordion ducts sag, kink and hold lint, so they are a poor choice behind a dryer. Smooth rigid metal duct is the better choice, with the fewest bends and the shortest run the layout permits. A vent that ends in a crawl space, attic or garage instead of outdoors needs to be corrected, because it fills that space with lint and moisture.

FAQ

Questions about appliance repair in Mecklenburg County

The questions below cover appliance repair in Mecklenburg County from booking through to the quote. Anything they miss can go in the form's notes box.

Ready to get it looked at?

The appliance is checked where it stands, at your home anywhere in Mecklenburg County, and the price comes before any work.

We cover the 29 residential ZIP codes in the county, grouped into 15 areas: the City of Charlotte and the towns of Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville. Where one of those ZIPs crosses into a neighboring county, the whole ZIP is covered.

Yes, by ZIP code. Outside Mecklenburg County we cover listed ZIPs in Cabarrus County (Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis), Union County (Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Monroe), Iredell County (Mooresville), Stanly and Anson counties, and York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina (Fort Mill, Rock Hill, Indian Land). Gaston and Lincoln counties aren't covered. Enter your ZIP in the search box to check.

No. Ballantyne, University City, SouthPark, South End, NoDa and Steele Creek are parts of the City of Charlotte. The county's separate towns are Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville.

The brand, the model number and a short description of what the appliance is doing. The model number is on a label inside the door or frame, behind the kick panel, or on the back. With it, the technician can check likely parts before the visit. Also mention parking, gate codes or building rules.

Parts are matched to the model number, with manufacturer parts used where they're available. If a part is an equivalent instead, the technician tells you before fitting it. That applies to every repair in Mecklenburg County, whatever the brand.

Check your lease or ask your landlord first. Many leases make the owner or property manager responsible for appliance repairs, and some managers have their own process. If you're cleared to arrange it, book a visit; a property manager can also book on a tenant's behalf.

Use the form to describe the symptom. Our technician sorts out the cause on site and names a repair price, which you can accept or turn down.
