It was formed in 1842 from parts of Anson and Mecklenburg, and Monroe is its county seat and only city. The county has grown fast since 1990, and the growth shows in the housing. Western Union County is mostly subdivisions built in the last three decades, while Monroe keeps a large historic district of houses built between the 1870s and about 1940, and the east and north are still rural, with private wells common in places.
