Samsung Refrigerator Problems: Demo Mode, Ice and Frost

Samsung fridge not cooling, icing up or buzzing? How demo mode, twin evaporators and door ice makers affect the symptoms, plus safe checks before calling.
By TrueFix CharlottePublished 6 min read

Samsung refrigerators are built differently enough from older designs that general advice can send you in the wrong direction. A warm fresh-food section, ice piling up inside a door, or a fan that suddenly sounds like it's chewing on something each have specific causes on these models. Here's how to sort out what you're looking at and which problems a homeowner can safely handle.

One note before you start. We are an independent repair company, not a Samsung service center. If your refrigerator is still covered by Samsung's warranty, contact Samsung first so the repair is handled under that coverage.

Rule out showroom mode first

It sounds too simple, but check it. Samsung refrigerators have a demo mode meant for store floors. In that mode the display and lights work normally while the compressor stays off. Samsung's own support pages say that if the display reads "O FF" or "OF OF" and the refrigerator isn't cooling, demo mode is the first thing to look at.

It can get switched on by accident when someone presses and holds the wrong buttons, or during a reset. The button combination to exit differs from model to model, so use the owner's manual for your exact model number. On Family Hub models the setting is reached through the screen. Once you exit, the display should return to normal temperature readings and the compressor should start.

Two evaporators change the symptoms

Many Samsung refrigerators use what Samsung calls Twin Cooling Plus: separate evaporators for the refrigerator and the freezer, each with its own fan, instead of one coil in the freezer feeding both. That matters when you diagnose.

On a single-evaporator refrigerator, a warm fresh-food section with a cold freezer usually means air isn't getting through from the freezer. On a Samsung with twin evaporators, the fresh-food side has its own coil, fan and defrost heater. If that coil frosts over or its fan stops, only the fresh-food side warms up, and the freezer gives you no clue. So a cold freezer doesn't tell you much on these models. The rear panel inside the fresh-food compartment is where to look.

A common early warning is noise. When frost builds up around the fresh-food evaporator, the fan blade can start brushing against ice and make a buzzing, rattling or grinding sound that comes and goes. If you hear that, a defrost problem is probably developing, even if temperatures still look fine.

Ice building up in the door ice maker

On many French-door Samsung models, the ice maker sits in an insulated compartment in the left fresh-food door or the upper corner of the cabinet. Cold air is ducted to it from the freezer. When that compartment doesn't seal or drain properly, you see:

  • A solid block of ice under or around the ice bucket.
  • The bucket frozen in place.
  • Water dripping onto the shelf below or into the crisper drawers.
  • A dispenser that delivers nothing, or only a few cubes.

What you can do: make sure the fresh-food door closes fully, since an overloaded door bin can hold it slightly open. Check the small gasket around the ice compartment cover for tears or a fold. Remove the bucket and let the ice melt with the ice maker switched off, using towels to catch the water. If the buildup comes back within a few weeks, the cause is usually in the defrost, airflow or drain arrangement for that compartment, and a technician needs to find which.

Humid weather makes this worse. Every time the doors open on a muggy Charlotte summer afternoon, moist air rushes in and some of it ends up as frost wherever the seal is weakest.

Water lines in winter

A Samsung with a dispenser or ice maker is connected to a water line, usually through a thin supply tube that runs through a cabinet, an exterior wall or the crawl space. During a hard freeze that line can freeze, which looks like an ice maker failure but isn't. If ice and water stop the morning after a cold night, check where the line runs before assuming a part has failed. A slow dispenser can also mean the water filter is overdue for its scheduled change; the manual lists the interval.

Normal behavior that worries people

Many Samsung refrigerators use a variable-speed inverter compressor. Instead of switching hard on and off, it slows down and runs for long stretches at low speed. A refrigerator that seems to run almost constantly, quietly, is usually doing exactly what it was designed to do. A compressor that clicks, stops, and never settles into a hum is a different story.

Safe checks before you call

Unplug the refrigerator or turn off its breaker before reaching behind any panel or into the ice compartment.

  1. Confirm the display isn't in demo mode and that the set temperatures are where you expect.
  2. Clear the air vents inside both sections; don't block them with tall containers.
  3. Clean the condenser coil. On most Samsung models it's at the bottom rear, behind a cover panel; follow the manual.
  4. Look for frost on the rear panel of the fresh-food compartment and the freezer.
  5. Check that both doors close and seal all the way around.

When it needs a technician

Call for a diagnosis if ice keeps coming back after a manual defrost, if you hear fan noise along with warming, if the compressor won't run, or if you see error codes on the display. The codes vary by model and generation, so look yours up in the manual for your exact model rather than trusting a generic chart.

A technician comes to the house, finds which of the two cooling systems or which part has failed, explains it, and quotes the repair before any work starts. Parts are matched to your model number: Samsung parts where available, and we'll tell you if a part is an equivalent. Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Samsung refrigerator is in demo mode?

The usual sign is "O FF" or "OF OF" on the display, with lights working but no cooling. The exit steps vary by model, so follow the instructions in the owner's manual for your model number or Samsung's support site.

Why is there ice in the bottom of my ice bucket compartment?

Moist air is getting into the compartment and freezing, or meltwater isn't draining away. A door that doesn't close fully, a damaged compartment gasket, or a defrost or drain problem can all cause it. If it returns after you clear it, have it diagnosed.

My Samsung runs all the time. Is that a problem?

Not by itself. Inverter compressors are designed to run long and slow. If temperatures are holding, the long run time is normal. If the refrigerator runs constantly and still warms up, that's worth a diagnosis.

Should I call Samsung or an independent repair company?

If the refrigerator is still under Samsung's warranty, start with Samsung. Once it's out of coverage, an independent company like us can diagnose and repair it.
