Appliance Repair in Matthews and Mint Hill: What to Know

Matthews and Mint Hill homes, from 1990s two-story houses to big-lot properties with garage freezers, plus what the Union County line means for booking.
By TrueFix CharlottePublished 6 min read

The chest freezer in the detached garage has gone quiet, or the gas range in your Matthews kitchen clicks but won't light. Before you call anyone, it helps to know two things: if your address is one we can reach, and what the age and layout of your home suggest about the problem. Matthews and Mint Hill sit side by side in southeast Mecklenburg, but they're different places, and their houses tend to have different kinds of trouble.

Two towns, and a lot of Charlotte in between

Matthews and Mint Hill are separate incorporated towns, not Charlotte neighborhoods. Matthews was incorporated in 1879 as a railroad town; it was first known as Stumptown and later as Fullwood. Mint Hill reincorporated in 1971 and grew considerably between the 2000 and 2020 censuses.

The town limits and the mailing names don't line up neatly. A good part of the 28105 ZIP is inside Charlotte city limits rather than Matthews, and close to half of 28227 is Charlotte as well, with Mint Hill making up most of the rest. That's why we say "in and around Matthews" and "in and around Mint Hill." For a repair visit it doesn't matter which side of a town line you're on.

The county line to the east

Mint Hill is the only Mecklenburg town that crosses into Union County, and a small part of it lies on the Union side. That part is in our area too, because we cover every address in the ZIP codes we serve. Matthews itself is in Mecklenburg, though it borders Union County, where Stallings sits. Stallings, Indian Trail, Weddington and Wesley Chapel are covered as well; see our Union County page.

If you live near the line, the county on your tax bill makes no difference to booking. Give us the full street address and we'll take it from there. Our Matthews and Mint Hill area page shows what's included.

Matthews: an old town center wrapped in newer suburbs

Downtown Matthews keeps a historic commercial district from its railroad-town days. Around it, the town grew outward with suburban subdivisions, many of them from the 1990s, mostly single-family homes with some townhomes and apartments mixed in.

For appliances, that typically means:

  • Two-story homes with laundry rooms upstairs or just off the kitchen. An upstairs washer leak shows up on the ceiling below, so check inlet hoses periodically and replace any that are bulging or cracked.
  • Kitchens that have been updated once or more. A 1990s house can hold a mix of original and newer appliances, which affects parts availability.
  • Gas and electric side by side. Gas service is widespread here, but plenty of homes are all-electric. Tell us which you have.

Mint Hill: bigger lots and a rural edge

Mint Hill feels different. Most homes are detached houses on larger lots, many built in the 1980s or later, and the town still has rural stretches along its edges. That changes the appliance picture in a few ways:

  • Outbuildings and garages. Detached garages and workshops often house a second refrigerator or a chest freezer. They see the full swing of Carolina summer heat and winter cold. Check the owner's manual for the temperature range the unit is rated to run in. Our article on freezers that stop freezing covers the garage-specific causes.
  • Laundry on the main floor. In single-story and larger homes, the washer and dryer often sit in a mudroom or utility room near the garage. A leak there is easier to spot, but a dryer vent may run a long way to reach an outside wall.
  • Crawl spaces and exposed lines. Water lines feeding a refrigerator or washer through a crawl space or an outside wall can freeze in a hard cold snap. Don't use torches or open flames to thaw a pipe.

Dryers and venting

Wherever the laundry room is, the dryer vent matters. Lint that builds up in the vent is a fire hazard, and long or crushed vent runs make dryers take longer and run hotter. Clean the lint screen with every load and have the full vent run cleaned regularly.

If the dryer runs but won't heat, start with the vent. After that, the cause differs between gas and electric models. A gas dryer relies on an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils; an electric dryer uses a heating element, thermal fuse and thermostats. See our page on dryer repair in Matthews and Mint Hill for the faults we work on.

Gas safety

If you smell gas, leave the house immediately. Don't use switches, phones or anything that could spark inside. Once you're outside, call your gas utility or 911.

Short of that, a few rules apply to gas ranges and dryers:

  • Don't disconnect a gas line yourself. Leave that to a qualified professional.
  • If burners light slowly, the flame looks mostly yellow, or the igniter clicks without lighting, turn the appliance off and leave it off until it's checked.
  • Never bypass a safety valve or thermocouple to get an oven going.

Storms and power outages

Southeast Mecklenburg gets summer thunderstorms and the occasional ice storm. Tree limbs on power lines can leave homes without power for long stretches. A few reminders:

  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. An unopened refrigerator keeps food safe about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48, or roughly 24 if half full (USDA and FoodSafety.gov).
  • Run any generator outdoors, well away from doors and windows, because of carbon monoxide.
  • After power returns, give the refrigerator a few hours to recover. If electronic controls are unresponsive, switch the appliance's breaker off for a minute and back on.
  • If water got into an appliance, don't power it up until it has been inspected.

Booking in Matthews and Mint Hill

We serve all of 28105 and 28227, including the parts that lie in Union County. The 28227 ZIP page has more on the Mint Hill side. Call or use the online form, and have the model number handy. A technician comes to the home, diagnoses the appliance, explains what failed and quotes the repair, and no work starts until you approve the price.

Frequently asked questions

My address says Mint Hill but I'm in Union County. Can you come?

Yes. Coverage goes by ZIP code, so the Union County part of Mint Hill is in our area along with the rest of the town.

Do you cover Stallings or Indian Trail?

Yes. Both are in Union County, which is part of our area. Stallings shares ZIP 28104 with Weddington and Wesley Chapel, and Indian Trail's main ZIP is 28079. Our Union County page lists them.

Is a freezer in a detached garage worth repairing?

That depends on the fault and the unit's condition. First confirm the freezer is rated for the temperatures in your garage. A unit that isn't designed for the space may keep acting up even after a repair.

My mailing address is Matthews, but my tax bill says Charlotte. Does that matter?

Not for us. Both are in Mecklenburg County, and we serve both.
